What is Lorem Ipsum?
Lorem Ipsum, often shortened to “lipsum,” is the familiar Latin-like text used to stand in for unfinished copy. It gives a layout the appearance of a populated page: words of different lengths, punctuation, and paragraphs with enough texture to judge the design.
An empty card tells you little about how a description will fit. Fill it with a few lines, and you can start judging its height, spacing, and balance with the image above it. That is the useful role of placeholder text: making a draft concrete while the wording is still being written.
From Roman philosophy to design mockups
The traditional passage has an unexpected ancestor: Cicero’s De finibus bonorum et malorum, a work on ethics written in 45 BC. Parts of the familiar text derive from passages discussing pleasure and pain. The original Latin and an English translation make the connection easier to see.
Its modern design history is much more recent. Letraset transfer sheets helped popularize Lorem Ipsum in the 1960s, before it became familiar in desktop publishing and digital layouts. The Latin scholar Richard McClintock traced its wording back to Cicero. The often-repeated story that printers used this exact filler in the 1500s is less certain than the ancient source of its words. Wikipedia’s history of Lorem Ipsum describes the evidence and competing origin accounts.
Does Lorem Ipsum mean anything?
The traditional text borrows from Latin, but altered words and missing pieces prevent it from reading as a coherent passage. Its name comes from a shortened form of dolorem ipsum, meaning “pain itself”; that does not make the whole placeholder paragraph a meaningful quotation. Wikipedia explains the wording and meaning.
This generator creates fresh combinations of Latin-like words. Use its output as design material, rather than as a Latin translation or a faithful reproduction of Cicero.
What placeholder text helps you see
Lorem Ipsum is most useful when you have a specific layout question to answer. Try it in these situations:
- Page and article layouts: fill several paragraphs to compare column widths, space around images, and the rhythm between headings and body text.
- Cards and product grids: use different amounts of text in neighboring cards to see whether buttons still line up and longer descriptions fit comfortably.
- Typography samples: compare fonts at the same size and width. Look at line wrapping, paragraph density, and the space between lines.
- Lists and sidebars: mix short and longer items to check indentation, wrapping, and the space between bullets or numbers.
For example, put a short description in one card and twice as much text in the next, then narrow the window. That comparison can reveal a fragile layout more quickly than filling every card with the same perfectly sized paragraph.
When real words work better
Placeholder text helps assess visual structure, but it cannot tell you whether a message is clear. Use realistic wording for navigation, buttons, form labels, and error messages: their meaning is part of the interaction you are designing.
Bring draft copy into the layout as soon as it is available. Real names, prices, long links, and product terms can wrap differently from lipsum. For a multilingual design, also try samples in the intended languages and writing systems. Latin-like filler will not show every spacing or wrapping challenge.
Before publishing, replace the dummy text and review the page again at narrow and wide widths. A layout that looked balanced with three neat paragraphs may need adjustment when the actual story arrives.
Plain text and HTML for your layout
Use plain text in a design app or visual editor, where you apply the formatting yourself. Choose HTML when you want paragraph or list elements ready for a web page’s source. HTML output includes content markup, without CSS or a complete document.
| Generate | Plain text | HTML markup |
|---|---|---|
| Paragraphs | Blocks separated by blank lines, with three to six sentences each. | Each paragraph in its own <p> element. |
| Sentences | The requested number of sentences in one block. | All sentences in one <p> element. |
| Words | Exactly the requested word count. | The same word count inside one <p> element. |
| List items | One sentence per line, prefixed with a hyphen. | An unordered <ul> or ordered <ol> list, with one <li> per item. |
Generate 1–100 paragraphs, sentences, or list items, or 1–10,000 words at a time. Word mode controls the exact amount of text; paragraph and sentence modes vary in total length. The optional opening phrase is shortened when you request fewer than five words.
How to use this tool
- Choose what to generate. Select paragraphs, sentences, words, or list items. The tool starts with three paragraphs.
- Adjust Options if needed. Change the number of items or opening phrase. Choose plain text for design apps, or HTML markup for a web page. HTML lists offer unordered bullets or ordered numbers.
- Review the live result. Every setting change updates the output. Use Regenerate text, the circular-arrow button, for another sample with the same settings.
- Copy the result. Select Copy result beside the output. If copying is unavailable, select and copy the text manually. Paste HTML into your editor’s source view or an HTML block.
If the count is empty or outside the selected format’s limit, the last valid result stays visible. Correct the count in Options to continue. Uncheck Start with “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet” there if you prefer a random opening.
