A profile picture without a photograph
An avatar is the small image that represents you beside a username, message or comment. An illustrated character can borrow familiar details from your appearance, such as a hairstyle or glasses, or give you a completely fictional identity for a game or community.
A photograph can suit a professional introduction where people need to recognize you in person. A cartoon avatar offers more freedom over the mood and colors of your profile, without putting a personal photo on display. It can be playful, understated or deliberately unlike you.
What makes an avatar recognizable?
At the size of a comment icon, a clear silhouette and a few distinctive details matter more than intricate decoration. A recognizable hairstyle, a strong color combination or a particular pair of glasses can give a character its identity even when smaller features are hard to see.
The background is part of that composition. A quiet color gives the face room to stand out; a lively pattern can suggest a more playful personality. Contrast between the hair and the background helps keep the outline visible. For example, dark hair against a pale background is easier to distinguish than dark hair against a similarly dark pattern.
Many services crop profile pictures into circles. Keep the details that matter near the center, and judge the result at the size it will actually appear. Reusing the same character and palette across related accounts can also help people recognize your posts.
Avatars for mockups and interface design
Illustrated people give a sample comment thread, profile card or team directory something to work with before final portraits are available. A varied set of characters can reveal how different backgrounds and silhouettes look within the same layout.
Pair those images with the Lorem Ipsum generator for draft descriptions. Use realistic sample names and different text lengths as well: an avatar beside a short name may look balanced while a longer name wraps awkwardly.
For a website, image delivery and accessibility deserve the same attention as appearance. The responsive images guide explains how to avoid sending oversized images to small display slots. Alternative text depends on the avatar’s role: a picture beside an existing name may be decorative, while a profile link containing only an image needs an accessible name. The W3C decision tree below covers these cases.
How to use this tool
- Open a section on the left and choose a thumbnail or color. On narrow screens, the preview appears above the controls. In Clothing, the accent color controls fabric patterns and trim independently of the background.
- Select All sections to return. Every section keeps its chosen settings.
- Use Surprise me for another character, Undo/Redo to revisit changes, or Reset avatar to start over.
- Choose a PNG size and press PNG. Wait for the preview to finish updating before exporting.
- Keep the discreet avatar code below the image, or use its copy button to copy the full share link. The edit button opens a dialog where you can paste a saved code or link to continue editing; anyone opening the link can recreate those settings. The code works on either language version of this tool.
The link keeps the settings after #avatar= in the URL, without uploading the avatar. Keep a PNG too if you need the exact image: artwork may be refined over time, while codes preserve your choices and colors.
